Jeddah's international Airport
For 33 days per year the new Jeddah Airport will host the influx of two million Muslims for the holy Hajj period in Mecca. No other airport in the world can claim such overwhelming specificity of its use. These programmatic requirements form the base for a new approach to both the organization of the airport and its architecture

King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Cultural Centre
King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz set the cornerstone for the Cultural Centre which will house a museum, library, theater, cinema and more. The building reflects the history of oil in Saudi Arabia and is different from the country’s architectonic traditions with its abstract and spectacular form. Along with five other internationally know architect offices, Snøhetta participated in the competition and was chosen in preference to famous names as Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas.

Mona Hatoum
This June, Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art will present an exhibition of important works by the British Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum. The exhibition will present works as yet unseen in London that cover more than a decade of Hatoum’s career. Including large-scale installations, sculpture and works on paper, this exhibition will illustrate the scope of Hatoum’s varied artistic practice that, through residencies and travels, draws its influence and materials from very different cultures and locales. The works in this show were made in places as diverse as Cairo, Stockholm, Jerusalem, rural France and a shaker community in North America. In the course of her international career Hatoum has created work in a variety of media, including performance, sculpture, video, installation and photography. Her work is rooted in notions of displacement, uncertainty and power structures, subjects that are addressed through the use of familiar, everyday domestic objects transformed into foreign, uncanny things. Hatoum’s practice also deals with issues related to the making of art and, in particular, with questions about the inherent physicality of sculpture as well as our relationship to the formal concerns of space and material.

Dubai's Opera House - update
Dubai is to build an opera house and two museums to reflect the 'cultural side' of the rapidly growing emirate, Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum said. The opera house, which has been designed by Baghdad-born architect Zaha Hadid, the first woman winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize, will be built on an island in Dubai's Creek area. It will feature two libraries and a school for music, and an outdoor theatre, as well as a marina and a luxury hotel, WAM said. One of the two planned museums will be dedicated to art while the other will be multidisciplinary, it added. zaha-hadid.com

Recycled Moroccan Delight
A restaurant full of trash might not necessarily be everyone’s cup of tea unless it is fitting out an ultra-trendy dining outlet in the heart of Paris. Of course not all Parisians would like to identify with the idea that they’re reveling in the presence on ‘trash’, instead using a term to identifying it as an individual work of art. This is also known as ‘kitsch’. For restaurant Andy Wahloo, its reputation has been built on rehashing the past, reinterpreting the essence of Middle Eastern nostalgia. The brainchild of restaurateur Mourad Mazouz and Karim Mazouz, Andy Wahloo can be instantly associated with the rest of the Mazouz franchise that includes the highly successful Sketch and Momo London eateries. Sticking to Mazouz’s distinct focus on combining dining with an innovative decor, Andy Wahloo enjoys the same recognizable Middle Eastern flair. Mazouz’s new breed of nightclubs around the European regions have become an instant success, attracting everyone from the snooty artistic types to celebrities such as Madonna, who threw a party at the launch of the Momo restaurant in London. Paris has been experiencing a rise in these North African venues within the last few years. This has been largely due to the strong population of Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians and other regional nationalities living in the city, many have set up successful ventures by promoting their hearty cuisine and invigorating night life. Venues such as Andy Wahloo have helped to re-write the urban scenes of Paris, introducing to the Parisians this new North African environment - rich and distinct with a modern and artistic twist.

Passing the Mic’ to the Arabs
There are two things that Iraqi-born artist Yassin has a fondness for. One of them is Hip Hop, whilst the other, appears to be airports. Describing his induction to Canada as, ‘a way out, a dream, a plane ticket and an immigration meeting’, he sums up his surroundings for us in a rather novel way. “What I love the most about Montreal is that people are all open-hearted and it's similar to an airport. You see so many different faces that help you get to your destination, but there are also those who hold you back and make you want to miss your flight. I call them Duty Free People.”
